May 07
It becomes difficult to ensure that the availability and quality of healthcare services is able to maintain its pace with the surprisingly getting better living standards in India which is progressing at a fast pace. To add to this is it also possible to ensure good standards of the quality healthcare service uniformly available at the different socio economic levels. In the context of India, these issues have a more unique significance largely because development in the availability of healthcare or the non-availability of it will either fasten or slow down the growth of the nation as a whole thereby affecting the political scenario of the country. There are a lot of challenges in the medical profession, particularly in the wellness and the healing sector, pertaining to their effect on the people’s quality of life. The public picture of the healthcare system of India has a variety of roles for the unitary and the state governments. The unitary government has under its discretion the health policies, the control of disease and regulatory concerns. The state level has decision making authority and control over the delivery of healthcare, financing and the training of professionals. The different departments of the national ministry are the wellness ministry, health research and traditional medicine system. The department of medical education comes in the purview of the state ministry. Family welfare and health services similar to the union government are also taken care by the states. In spite of having established an infrastructure and invested the required finance in the public healthcare system, India is able to take care of only 20% of the needs of the population. The remaining 80% of the needs are taken care of by the private healthcare facilities. There are many challenges in the healthcare sector in the present time and it is the responsibility of the government to address these challenges thereby ensuring the basic facilities to the grass root level of the economy. The government should also consider that there is no disparity in the health care provisions on the basis of the socio economic divide.
The health situation in India has the following problems and each of these sub sectors are specific and pose as a challenge in the Indian healthcare sector thus calling for an innovative intervention.
