With candidates aspiring to obtain an admission in prestigious IIT etc institutions, the number of aspirants attempting GATE exam is increasing year-by-year. It is estimated that around 837,432 candidates will take up GATE exam in the year 2020. However, clearing the GATE exam is not everybody’s cup of tea. One needs to have an in-depth knowledge about the subjects, tricks to solve the questions, time management skills and many more.

To help aspirants prepare and clear the GATE exam with flying colours, we have enlisted a few tips that were followed the GATE exam toppers.

  1. Know the exam syllabus and question paper pattern:  Being familiar with GATE syllabus and pattern is half the battle won. An adequate understanding of the exam syllabus & pattern will go a long way to help your preparation. Hence go through official GATE syllabus website and find out the syllabus for the exam in that particular year. The question paper normally consists of MCQs, compulsory sections, numerical sections etc. Also learn the weightage of each topic in different sections. You will find all the necessary details in the official website.
  2. Choose the apt study materials – A single book will not contain all the necessary information about a topic. Have 3-4 books for one topic. Start with one book and move to another to collect more information about the subject. Although there are plenty of books are available out there, you cannot use them all. Use books that are official recommended by GATE exam community.
  3. Schedule your time – It is advisable to have a well-planned time that needs to be followed while preparing for the exam. Studying is random manner will pay nothing to you. Allot time for each topic and complete it within the predetermined time.This will you be regular and punctual about in your studies and also organises the preparation process.
  4. Solve previous years’ and practice question papers – GATE practice papers will help you to identify the crucial topics and their weightage in a particular paper. By solving earlier question papers, mock tests and practice papers you will be familiar with the pattern of the questions and time required to complete them. You can download the question paper from the GATE website.
  5. Revise on a regular basis – Although you have prepared well and are confident with the topics, it is mandate to revise the topics. This will help you evaluate yourself and also ensure that you are thorough with all the topics.  

Remember, you cannot clear this exam just by mugging up possible concepts. It is a technical exam and requires expertise to clear it. Hence, make sure you mastered each topic. Good luck!
