Problems that non native students face
Jun 04
Language is a medium, through which people of all over the world express themselves in both spoken and written form. Without the development of language none of the cultures would have ever developed because communication is vital for evolution. Even if people do not know the language of different countries they can communicate with the help of intermediaries who have knowledge of both the languages. The interaction among people of different countries also leads to the amalgamation of cultures and traditions of the people who inhabit the countries where intercultural communication is taking place.
The primary problems that non native students face are mainly related to language of the native speakers. They are completely unaware about the language and find it difficult to communicate with peers and teachers. The second problem that they face with foreign language is related to accent. Generally in case of non native speakers the accent of the foreign language gets influenced by their first language. They struggle with pronunciation of words because while trying to learn how to pronounce the words of the new language their pronunciation gets influenced by the mother tongue. They develop their own pronunciations of the words of the foreign language. Thirdly, the problem arises with the understanding of how the language works, that is, the grammar of the language. Fourthly, the non native students face problem with the use of the language. They lack confidence in speaking fluently in foreign language because they are more accustomed in using their mother tongue.
Apart from the problems associated with the use of the language, the students also enter a new social and cultural environment while they start to learn the foreign language. They have to take a journey across cultural boundaries which are challenging and complicated because these students have to cope up with the dissimilarities and unfamiliarity of the new culture, which causes anxiety in them. If they fail to adjust to the differences between the two cultures, the environment in which they start learning the language also deteriorates, which may ultimately come as a cultural blow to the student. To adjust in the initial time period is the most challenging aspect of learning a new language.
It is only after adjusting with the surroundings of the foreign country that the student starts to learn the intricacies of the language. Gradually the students gain competence in the foreign language. But the influence of the mother tongue is always prevalent. Moreover, language is always interlinked with the culture of the country, so the greater the difference in culture and language structure, the more difficult it becomes for the students to cope up with the scholastic and communal life of the distant country.
