Homework: Should it be banned?
Nov 07
Interestingly, for generations, no student has been spared from the nuances of homework. Your parents (and those before them), yourself, your own kids, and maybe your grand children too – everyone would have had their share of these never-ending homework sessions! Unsurprisingly and understandably, thousands have debated over the decades about the necessity or the worthlessness of homework assignments. In fact, many people have opted for the abolishment of homework. Before we further delve into the reasons for banning homework, let us consider some basic facts that outline the importance and need for homework.
Some positive aspects of homework:
• First of all, students can polish up their academic skills and practice what they have learnt in class by doing homework regularly. This also helps them master their subjects and prepares them for the upcoming complex lessons and problems. Such regular rehearsals help them remember their lectures well, thereby reducing the overall failure rate.
• When students complete their assignments on their own, their confidence and independence improves by a great deal. This self-assurance will make them more reliable and would enable them to carry out complicated projects in the future, thus making them more organized and prepared for their higher education.
• Pupils who do their exercises routinely will acquire a knack for learning. Further, their memory and their sense of responsibility will also improve a lot. They will also learn to use their time well, in that way they learn a lot about time management. These skills are essential not only for their student life, but will definitely serve them well throughout their entire lifespan.
• Unlike the olden days, students of this age are usually encouraged to use resources such as the Internet, libraries, etc. for completing various homework projects. Naturally the student will be inclined to learn more than the portion covered in their classroom sessions. By executing different projects that demand them to research references, students will also learn to apply various skills to diverse situations. So, you can safely say that at later days, they will become skilled at doing many more worthwhile things rather than being confined to mere clerical work.
Then why some wish to ban homework? Some people contend that the family time is compromised greatly as the kids spend more and more time in completing their daily assignments. It also reduces the time spent on other extra-curricular activities, while increasing the kids’ stress and pressure. On the whole, it looks like the child or teen is spending his entire day on studies, all because of the extra homework that has to be completed after the usual school time. Obviously excessive studies and homework is certainly undesirable and detrimental to the child.
Final conclusion: While too much homework is not commendable, a moderate amount of assignments will only be beneficial to the student. In general, the importance of homework should not be overlooked as students do learn a lot by practicing their assignments.
