Is the medical industry exploiting people?

Medical or pharmaceutical industry is expanding tremendously in every corner of the world, and with passing time the medical industry has answered many questions. Scientists and healthcare experts have now discovered solutions to those diseases, which were once in the category of incurable diseases. Indian medical industry is also growing tremendously with an average growth of 20% per year and the industry would reach the mark of $100 billion by the end of 2015.

This clearly shows the expenditure people are incurring on this sector. Many foreign countries are now relying on the sophisticated and cost-effective treatments in India. Government is taking necessary steps in the development of the medical industry, and with the growth in the medical industry we will have a healthy future. The merger of IT industry with the medical industry has shown unexpected growth and scientists have given solutions to many hazardous diseases.

However, due to privatization of the medical industry, many poor people suffer. It is because they are not able to pay the fees of private hospitals as these hospitals charge astronomical fee in the name of good facilities, better medical help and advanced technology. Here are the few reasons why the medical industry seems to be exploiting people:

  1. To maintain the private hospitals in good working condition, appropriate funds are required. These funds are collected from the patients as cost of treatment.
  2. The patients are misguided about their medical conditions and are often advised to enhance the period of medication or to take more intense treatment. This causes mental trauma to the patient while the doctors make their share of money.
  3. One of the major reasons for growth of the business is that the education system nowadays is too costly for a common man to take up professional courses like medicine. So, if a student takes an education loan to complete his professional course, he finds that the easiest way to repay is to take that money from their patients.
  4. With the increase in advanced technologies, new diseases and medical problems have also come up. While the treatment may be not so costly, but due to ignorance or negligence, people believe whatever their doctor tells them and go through costly medical treatments.
  5. For couples, who are not blessed with a child, surrogacy is a boon. But in this process, it’s the choice of the surrogate mother which matters the most. But again, it has become a profession for many medical practitioners. They get poor ladies to become surrogate mother alluring them with hefty amounts of money.

The flaws can be removed by putting a curb on the fee charged by private hospitals.
